Yamashita
Tasty Japanese
This is one of John's favourite Japanese restaurants in Hobart. He says it makes him feel like he is in Japan - the friendly robot greeting you at the door and leading you to the front counter certainly has a Japanese flourish! Yamashita means "under the mountain" in Japanese - there is a sense of pride in incorporating fresh local produce on the menu. The restaurant space is huge but is furnished to make the space feel inviting and warm. Our last visit, for lunch, was on a freezing cold day but the interior was cosy and well-heated. I think another attraction for John is the accessibility - the tables are very well spaced out and easy to manoeuvre around.
The service here is fast and efficient - we always get our meals quickly, another Japanese quality. The menu is extensive and has all of the usual Japanese favourites - sashimi(often on the daily specials board), tempura, okonomiyaki, sushi, gyoza, teppanyaki, etc. At lunch time there are set lunch options which are very good value and there are many options to choose from. The sets always include miso soup and chawanmushi - a savoury egg custard.
The chawanmushi is served in a beautiful ceramic cup.
We both chose from the lunch set menu but opted for the tuna sashimi special to share as a starter, featuring fresh, local Blue Fin Tuna, a rare treat. The sashimi offered two types of tuna - a fatty portion and a lean portion. Usually I am a fan of the lean variety of tuna but this fatty portion was really delicious. Just goes to show, it is always best to try every time and not judge on your past experience with a food :-) As always, the sashimi was beautifully presented.
Choosing a set menu option in Japan is always lovely as the tray comes with an array of beautifully presented dishes and treats.
The tonkatsu pork was tender and juicy with a crispy coating. John chose the mixed seafood bowl which also included avocado. He was pleased with his choice. The set also came with a small bowl of wakame salad - another Japanese favourite.
We didn't have room for dessert, even though the matcha ice cream was tempting. Visiting this restaurant was like a little trip to Japan on a wintery Hobart day :-)
