Experiences We Love

Peppina

 Consistently Amazing Italian Food!

Peppina burst onto the Hobart food scene late last year with the opening of The Tasman Hotel, down on the waterfront.  It is a very welcome addition! We have been lucky enough to visit on numerous occasions including romantic dinners for two, dining with groups of friends and family dinners.  The latest visit was as part of a package when we were staying at the hotel.  Every single experience at Peppina has been fantastic.  We have had the chef's feast menu many times and enjoyed it thoroughly.  There is always an abundance of food and the dishes included capitalise on what is seasonal and fresh.

The restaurant itself is visually spectacular. It has two gorgeous olive trees growing inside, reaching towards the glass ceiling.  The materials used are an appealing mix of stone, timber and metal.  The kitchen is open and busy, providing the entertainment of watching the skilled chefs at work.  There are a range of seating options including cosy booths, free standing tables and a cool central bar.

The restaurant is very accessible. There is plenty of space to move around,  a ramp to the front door and the bathrooms are accessible. There is an internal door where diners can move through to Mary Mary, the adjoining wine bar, which also has a lift at the front door to accommodate customers in wheelchairs.

The service at Peppina is exceptional. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable about the food and wine they are serving.  The wine list is extensive and it can be hard to make a decision which is where consulting with the sommelier is advisable.  We have enjoyed some lovely wine choices at Peppina including some interesting international wines.

Make sure that you visit Peppina hungry! The servings are generous and when they offer a feast, they mean it! The food is designed to be shared and enjoyed together.  The feast includes four courses and the first course is a range of small plates.  We enjoyed scallops, oysters, pizza fritta(an absolute favourite - we always order this!) and salumi.  All were tasty and beautifully presented.  The scallops were juicy and cooked perfectly.  Other great options from the entree list include the meatballs and the octopus.

The divine pizza fritto.

The pasta course was delicious.  We were served ricotta cavatelli which included al dente pasta with pancetta, stracciatela, lemon, chilli and broccolini. It was tasty and plentiful.  The gnocchi is also a great choice from the pasta list. So far this has never been an inclusion on the feast.

The main course was a special and was so wonderfully melt in the mouth and tasty!  It was slow cooked ribs  with a creamy mash and wilted greens.  We absolutely loved this dish - lots of umami!  The mains also included two scrumptious sides - a cauliflower with cheese and a roasted pumpkin with yoghurt dressing.  Lovely accompaniments to compliment the richness of the ribs.

For dessert we requested panna cotta as John is not a fan of tiramisu.  I have enjoyed the tiramisu on other occasions and it is a beautiful and authentic version of this Italian favourite - beautiful textures and rich coffee flavour abound.  We enjoyed the silky panna cotta which was served with seasonal fruits.

Peppina has quickly become a new favourite for us.  It consistently delivers quality, delicious Italian flavours which also make the most of fresh local produce, friendly and authentic service which keeps you coming back and a beautiful environment to celebrate all of this.  Bookings are highly recommended!  If you would like to read about the fantastic brunch then visit the blog page about The Tasman.
