Experiences We Love

The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery

Beautiful Setting and Delicious Degustation!

The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery is about half an hour north of Hobart in the picturesque Derwent Valley - beautiful in all seasons!  We have eaten there on a number of occasions and this time we booked for lunch on the way back from a stay at Curringa Farm near Hamilton.  It is always very busy so bookings are essential and usually required quite a way in advance.  The setting is lovely - surprising for a revamped mental hospital site.  The space is huge and the tables are well spaced.  There is a huge woodheater in the centre which does a great job during winter months.

The menu is seasonal and is packed full of fresh local produce.  Many of the items are made by the talented chefs on site including cheese, bread, meats and the vegetables and herbs are freshly picked from the garden.  There is a kiosk attached to the restaurant too which also has many delicious sounding offerings.

The lunch is a set menu based on what is seasonal and fresh. It is always impressive.  The wine list is equally impressive and features many Tasmanian wineries.  There are usually some quirky and unusual choices which capture our attention.  It is also good to ask for some advice for what will go with the everchanging menu.  Alternatively you can go with the matched wines.

We started off with delicious sourdough, cooked in the woodfired oven.  It was crusty and had a delicious flavour.

We also had housemade salami which was fantastic.

The burrata was AMAZING - a definite highlight.  It was stretchy and creamy.

This was followed by fresh and crispy radish, turnip and leek.  The vegetables were full of flavour and we enjoyed them immensely.

We were really looking forward to the potato cakes as we have had these on previous visits.  They are so, so tasty, crispy and go very well with the tomato kasundi(sauce).

Next up was the oysters.  John loved them!

The trumpeter was delicious - the flavour with the rye bread and the fresh thinly sliced carrot was such a good combination.

Mushrooms, lardo and braesola - another house made cured meat. Delicious!!

This was another favourite - green corn polenta - so creamy and smooth and full of flavour.  Alongside it was wood-grilled greens.

Cabbage rolls remind me of my childhood.  These were packed with delicious pork and were served on a bed of silky mashed parsnip.

This was an additional course - cheese.

Then came dessert!  So good!  Rum baba accompanied by bread ice cream.

We always come away from the Agrarian Kitchen feeling absolutely satisfied and full of delicious food.  The service is outstanding - very efficient, knowledgeable and warm. We are always happy to spend a wonderful few hours enjoying a long lunch.
