Experiences We Love

The Tasman

 Wonderful Staycation in Hobart!

For my birthday weekend I gently hinted to John that it might be nice to have a little break away in the newest waterfront hotel, The Tasman, part of the Marriott Luxury Collection.  There was a very tempting one night package which we took advantage of called 'Love de Luxe' which included a beautiful room with a fireplace, dinner and breakfast at Peppina and a bottle of Arras bubbles and Coal River chocolates on arrival. How could we resist!!

The check in was efficient, although not overly warm, but the lovely gentleman who showed us to our room was full of  warmth, chattiness and a clear desire to be helpful. We were very impressed with our beautiful room. It had a very cosy feel yet was spacious and certainly wheelchair accessible. The bathroom was huge!

The furnishings are art deco in style and fit with the original history of the building. It feels as though no expense was spared in choosing quality fabrics, fittings and furnishings.  The electric fireplace really adds to the cosy feel of the room. The walls are thick and soundproof, even though we faced on to Davey Street and the king sized bed was extremely comfortable.

The bathroom had a huge shower bay but sadly no bath, probably a concession to accessibility, although the room certainly had enough space to fit a bath!  The blinds were controlled via the light switch and the hairdryer was excellent quality. The towels and bathrobes were thick and luxurious.

As promised, the bubbles and chocolates were awaiting our arrival along with a welcoming message.

At the end of the bed was a comfy little couch where you could snuggle in front of the fire.  There was the option to order room service which sounded lovely but we had dinner plans at Peppina so, maybe next time...

Around the hotel were inviting little nooks to sit and read or just relax.  The bookshelf stocked many titles which highlighted places to see around Tasmania - great for tourists.

Our dinner booking was at 8.30 so we had plenty of time after check in to wander down the street and check out some of the local eateries and bars - new ones we hadn't visited before.  We discovered Franklin Wharf where we sampled a few late lunch snacks and had coffee.  Then we wandered up to Institut Polaire, a fabulous little gin/wine bar where we indulged in a drink.  We will return to both places as the service was fantastic and the menus very tempting!

Late lunch nibbles - Kingfish sashimi and a spicy crayfish roll.  Wonderful flavours!

As part of our package we had the dinner feast at Peppina which was delicious and included a bounty of beautiful Italian food.  The post about dinner is included on the Restaurant page.  There are other options for dining/drinks at the hotel including Mary Mary, a hip bar, and The Deco Lounge, an inviting cafe, which offers breakfast, high tea and dining options throughout the day.  As our food needs were all covered by our package deal, we have not yet experienced The Deco Lounge but would love to visit another time.  So little time, so many experiences to try!

We were treated to a sumptuous breakfast at Peppina.  We  ventured out for a brisk morning walk first to work up an appetite and were glad we did as the buffet was full of delicious offerings.   We particularly loved the honeycomb suspended on a frame and the many, many colourful salads full of fresh ingredients.  As well as the buffet, guests can choose cooked favourites which are served to the table.  There were freshly squeezed juices, fruit smoothies and free flowing tea and coffee.

The pastries were hard to resist and the Italian doughnuts with lemon curd were impossible to resist!!

After breakfast, we packed up in a leisurely manner as our checkout time was 11.00.  For a one night stay, we felt we had packed so much in and still had the rest of the day to enjoy back at home!  We would highly recommend a staycation here at The Tasman.  It is a beautiful, warm, quiet oasis and we came away feeling very relaxed and thoroughly spoilt!  We certainly didn't need to eat for the rest of the weekend!

We felt that there were a few teething issues which could be ironed out.  We had a lovely package but different parts of the process were not very smooth and it felt like communication between the staff involved could have been better.  Check in and check out were perfunctory rather than warm and we were initially charged for the included wine and chocolates, although this was quickly rectified when we pointed this out.

Overall, we had a lovely night away and thought the package deal was very good value.
