St Albi
Reliably Amazing! - An Old Fav!!
St. Albi, in Moonah, is an absolute favourite for us. It is reliable in its fantastic food and great service. It is like visiting family to return to this amazing space for one of the best steaks in Tassie!
This visit was for a family dinner - not for any particular reason, just because. The space in St. Albi is huge - a cavernous converted warehouse. You would be forgiven for thinking that it might be cold and lacking in atmosphere but St. Albi has a wonderful warmth - possibly helped by the huge ceiling heaters but also because of the warm welcome from the staff and the well-chosen interior design. There is a mezzanine floor which can be booked for private functions - this is not accessible except by stairs. There are many tables which are well spaced - lots of room for the wheelchair to manoeuvre. There is a central bar and the kitchen is at the rear of the space - all visible to the diners and adding to the bustling, hip atmosphere. Bookings are recommended(especially for larger groups) as the restaurant is very popular, however, we have always been able to book a table even at short notice.
Our family love a good steak and rarely order anything else whenever we visit St. Albi. The steaks come in a variety of sizes to suit different appetites and with a variety of sauces and rubs. They also come with a side dish so if several diners order steak then sharing the sides is a sensible option.
The menu also has many other delicious options and caters for dietary needs. On other occasions I have tried the chicken, curry, seafood and lamb and enjoyed them all. On the night we dined there was a steak pie special which looked amazing but I couldn't go past the steak. I was glad of my choice - the steak was cooked perfectly rare and was juicy and tender. I opted for the JP which meant my steak was wrapped in bacon and served with a peppercorn sauce. It was fantastic. Several of our group chose the Cox rub which is a coffee rub and a shallot butter, a favourite for our family too.
The wine list is always full of good choices and it can be hard to decide - I always ask for advice from the staff. This time we selected a Stoney Vineyard Cab Sav which was delicious, full-bodied and smooth, and a wonderful accompaniment to the steak.
We all decided to have dessert - those who know our family will not be surprised :-)
There was an espresso panna cotta which was amazing - the panna cotta flavours vary depending on what is seasonal. There was also a brownie special which John chose.
